At Greystone Centennial Middle School, there has been some targeted piloting of alternative classroom design, done purposely to explore the impact it has on student engagement, student learning and classroom culture. This year, the pilot program has expanded to combined classrooms in areas that haven't always been classrooms including common areas and the library. Our teachers have begun experimenting with the furniture, decor and the lighting in their rooms and have created a bit of a "softer" and more welcoming classroom for their students. Melissa Kerby, a teacher in Gr. 8 at Greystone will talk about her own journey in changing her room, and along with Jesse McLean, the assistant principal of Greystone, will show examples from a number of areas in their school.
